Galway hold on as Mayo comeback runs out of time.
A crowd of over 30,000 were in McHale Park, Castlebar for the Connacht Football Final.
In the opening half a rampant Galway were too good for Mayo dominating play to lead 0-10 to 0-3 at the interval. A Mickie Rooney goal six minutes into the second half extended the Galway lead to ten points.
A John Corcoran free kick for Mayo left the score Galway 0-17 Mayo 0-05. Further points from Willie McGee and Sean Kilbride and a fisted goal from Mick Gannon gave Mayo and their supporters hope. With 14 minutes remaining the score was Galway 1- 15 Mayo 1-09.
With six minutes to go another Sean Kilbride point reduced the gap to five. Galway 1-17 Mayo 1-12. Mayo continued to apply pressure and Galway goalkeeper Gay Mitchell was forced to save a close range effort from Willie McGee. Eventually a goal came when John Morley palmed a free kick from Joe Corcoran to the net. Too late for Mayo though as this came at the end of the game.
The final score was Galway 1-17 Mayo 2-12.
