Entry to the European Economic Community is marked in Tallaght, Dublin with the planting of a tree.

Local authorities across the country perform tree-planting ceremonies to mark Ireland's accession to the European Economic Community (EEC). The tree planting ceremonies have been sanctioned by the Minister for Local Government Robert Molloy

Chairperson of Dublin County Council Richard Burke presides over the tree planting at Saint Maelruan's Park housing estate in Tallaght.

Speaking to those assembled, Richard Burke believes joining the EEC is a joyful and historical day in the life of the Irish people. He dispels the fear that membership of the EEC will be the death of Irishness. He thinks the opposite will happen. Ireland will prosper from the operation of the Common Market and the Irish Government will be much better equipped to advance Gaeltacht areas.
