The last fair day is held in Castleisland before a government ban to prevent foot and mouth disease comes into effect.

As anxiety mounts throughout Ireland at the increase in the number of foot and mouth disease outbreaks in the United Kingdom, measures are being taken to protect Ireland's agriculture.

Minister for Agriculture Neal Blaney has banned all cattle fairs and shows. Horse and dog racing, coursing, hunting, shooting, fishing and certain other sports have also been prohibited.

In County Kerry the last Castleisland Street Fair takes place before the government ban comes into effect. Cattle are bought and sold on the Main Street of the town.
