A colourful parade through the streets of the town marks the start of the Letterkenny Folk Festival.

Onlookers on the streets of Letterkenny to watch the opening parade were entertained with international music and dance.

Festival director Barney Doherty believes that so far the event has been a great success with good weather and a large attendance. With a limited budget, the festival committee has the arduous task of selecting the best acts to perform in Letterkenny. Groups from West Germany, Istanbul, England, Ukrainian dancers from Scotland, the Isle of Man, the USA and many Irish groups were selected to perform throughout the festival.

The appearance and performance of the Morris dancers from Hammersmith in England helped to make this one of the most successful festivals in the fourteen year history of the event.

The festival closing ceremony takes place tomorrow where the official festival flag will be folded away until next year.
