A variety of sports and games are on display in events organised by Cospoir the National Sports Council.
The Youth Priory Band and the Garda Band led the opening parades at Cospoir's Sport For All Day held in Morton Stadium, Santry.
The emphasis this year is on women in sport. Those present were treated to demonstrations of gymnastics, fencing, martial arts and parachute jumping, proving that sport is not limited to any particular age or ability.
In Dublin city centre Taoiseach Charles Haughey and Lady Valerie Goulding started a five mile celebrity run from Middle Abbey Street to Raheny.
It was not all fun and games however, as a group protesting against the closure of Dun Laoghaire and Blackrock swimming baths collected signatures for a petition which will be submitted to Dublin Corporation.
