The Dublin Theatre Festival gets off to a colourful and noisy start at the Mansion House.

The 1991 Dublin Theatre Festival was officially opened by President Mary Robinson. Over two weeks audiences have the chance to see an extensive line up of international and Irish theatre.

The festival got off to a colourful and somewhat noisy start in Dublin this morning.

Upon arrival at the Mansion House for the launch, President Mary Robinson was greeted by a mock publicity protest for the event.

The Dublin Theatre Festival is costing almost £1 million to stage and includes over 50 productions, 313 performances, 19 companies from overseas, and new Irish plays. The festival will also have every play Samuel Beckett ever wrote. Festival director Tony O'Dalaigh believes there is,

Something for everybody.

Visiting production companies were welcomed by veteran entertainer Maureen Potter.

There has been one last minute hitch as one of the venues, a marquee in Tallaght, was destroyed by strong winds yesterday. The marquee was to be used by the French Archaos company. In true showbiz style, the show will go on as arrangements are being made to find an alternative venue.

The festival runs from 7 to 19 October at venues throughout Dublin.
