The 11th triennial conference of the Associated Countrywomen of the World (ACWW) opens at the RDS in Dublin.
Officially, 250 delegates from 46 countries were in attendance at the Royal Dublin Society (RDS) in Ballsbridge Dublin. However, it is estimated that the actual attendance figure will be close to three thousand by tomorrow.
Taoiseach Sean Lemass addressed the conference and reinforced the government's commitment to the role of the Irish Countrywomen’s Association (ICA) in Irish society and support for their spirit of fostering a spirit of cooperation for women in rural life. This further reinforced the theme of the conference of 'Working Together’.
He talked about the role of the Irish farm in Irish society and he also talked about the role of the Irish wife, saying that a well run farm and a competent housewife go together.
The farm home is the heart of the farm and the good housewife will keep it running smoothly while at the same time lending a helping hand to her partner in the farm enterprise.
Proceedings were led by the President of the ACWW Mrs Van Beekhoff and the President of the ICA Mrs Nora Burton.
Mrs Van Beekhoff comments that the conference will enable members from around the world to work together in different ways.
President Éamon de Valera was also in attendance.
