The Irish National and International surfing championships are held at Strandhill County Sligo.

Organised by the Sligo Surf Club and the Irish Surfing Association the Irish Surfing Championships had originally been due to take place earlier in the month, but unusually calm seas at that time forced them to be postponed.

Thankfully the weather and waves obliged this weekend, and large crowds came to watch over fifty surfers from all over Ireland compete with those from as far abroad as Australia, the United States and South Africa.

For the spectators the competition provided both thrills and spills.

American surfer Aaron Lod from California was the winner of the International Surfing Championship, and Alan Duke from County Antrim won the National Championship.
