In traditional Irish music lilting is a form of singing without words, sometimes referred to as 'mouth music'. It is also found in Gaelic speaking parts of Scotland, where it is called ‘Puirt à beul’.
Lilting can be accompanied by music, performed unaccompanied as a solo performance, or to provide music for people to dance to in the absence of instruments.
