Twenty five thousand people climb Croagh Patrick in a journey of prayer, reflection and devotion on Reek Sunday.

The annual day of pilgrimage takes place on the last Sunday of July each year. The first of the pilgrims began the climb just after 5 AM.

Many discarded their shoes at the base of the holy mountain.

Celebrating mass on the reek, the Archbishop of Tuam Dr Michael Neary said, people now benefiting from economic prosperity must ensure that the extraordinary development the country is experiencing is shared by all.

Special celebrations took place at the foot of the mountain for seventy five year old Martin Nylan from Swinford who completed his fiftieth climb on the Reek.
