New legislation means that people in Ireland will have to undergo a driving test before they can get a licence.
On 18 March 1964, driving tests came into operation in Ireland. New drivers were for the first time required to pass a test in order to obtain a licence.
Minister for Transport Mr Neil Blaney describes the new test as comprehensive, covering all the sensible things that drivers must know without going into any obscure detail.
Practically everything that one knows about driving is brought into play in this test.
Neil Blaney believes you have got to be a competent driver and know the rules of the road in order to pass the test.
