A week after the arrival of satellite television on the east coast of Ireland, Kevin O'Connor finds out what the public think of this new service and what does it mean for RTÉ.

Satellite TV now offers Irish viewers more channels and more choice of programmes.  One of the main appeals for young people is that the new satellite channels show more pop videos than RTÉ.

But will people be willing to pay for Super Channel and Sky? Some of those interviewed believe the service would be worth paying for.

Will the promised global television village come within the touch of a sensory button?

However, there is one area of RTÉ that can take heart. People are still interested in watching Irish news on RTÉ.

An RTÉ News report broadcast on 7 February 1987. The reporter is Kevin O'Connor.
