Singer Nóirín Ní Riain leads the monks of Glenstal in 'Suantraí na Maighdine', or 'The Virgin's Lullaby'.
Written by Seán Óg Ó Tuama, this traditional Irish Christmas hymn takes the form of a lullaby sung by the Virgin Mary to the infant Jesus, as she settles him to sleep at night.
Glenstal Abbey is a Benedictine monastery in Murroe, County Limerick, and was founded in 1927. The monks assemble together for prayer several times a day, and Gregorian chant plays a significant part. They also run a boarding school for boys, a farm and a guesthouse on the abbey site.
NóirínNí Riain, who is also a theologian and an authority on Gregorian chant, was the first woman to sing with the monks of Glenstal Abbey. In this clip she also accompanies them on the harmonium.
This Christmas special episode of 'Cúrsaí' was broadcast on 25 December 1986.
