Final preparations are under way for the 75th anniversary commemoration of the 1916 Rising organised by the State at the GPO in Dublin.

Commemoration not Celebration is the official word being used to mark the 75th anniversary of the 1916 Rising

A simple ceremony at the GPO will mark the 75th anniversary of 1991 in contrast to the fanfare of glory and celebration of the 50th anniversary in 1966. The event will concentrate on the historical importance of 1916 in laying the foundation stone of the Irish Republic.

As Supreme Commander of the Defence Forces President Robinson will inspect a Guard of Honour. Captain Sean Fitzpatrick of the Curragh Cadet School will read the 1916 proclamation. The tricolour will be hoisted as the national anthem is played. Taoiseach Charles Haughey will then launch a 1916 commemorative stamp.
