Tomás Ó Fiaich and the complexity of his native South Armagh
Monsignor Tomás Ó Fiaich became the latest public figure to revisit their childhood home for RTÉ's 'My Own Place' on 5 November 1975. At the time he was President of St Patrick's College, in Maynooth, Co. Kildare, but often made time to return to his native Crossmaglen in Co. Armagh. In this extract he talks about the people of the area.
The local people feel themselves Irish. They feel themselves cut off from their natural home. The very fact that in some ways in recent years they could display their Irishness by flying the Irish flag over the local town hall or courthouse, by painting the tricolour on various roads, by associating themselves with the Irish language movement and putting up signs all around the town.... Is dóigh liom go léiríonn sé sin go mothaíonn siad iad féin mar Éireannaigh.
On a visit to Slieve Gullion, Tomás Ó Fiaich recounts some of the mythology associated with the mountain.
