Under new road safety laws the general speed limit is to be increased to just over 62 miles per hour.
The new speed limit was announced by Minister for the Environment Padraig Flynn at the launch of International Road Safety Week.
Padraig Flynn says the increase in the speed limit from 55 to just over 62 miles per hour (or 100 km per hour) was to bring Irish law in line with speed limits in other European countries. Defending this decision the minsiter said,
Speed does not kill. Excessive speed kills.
Padraig Flynn says the limit is realistic and that he is also considering reducing the alcohol limit for drivers from 100 to 80 milligrams.
