Gambling, Amusement Arcades and Addiction

A look at gambling addiction and the operation of illegal gambling machines in Ireland.

A 'Today Tonight' report by Brendan O'Brien examaines the issue of gambling addiction. Mary Bolton, Senior Counsellor with the Rutland Centre, describes how anyone can become a gambling addict and there is not one specific profile. Phil Bates, Director of the Samaritans, describes the destructive nature of a gambling addiction that can ruin lives. Jimmy Cafola, owner of the Fun Palace, has a different perspective on gambling and thinks that many people who have never been inside an amusement arcade, have an unwarranted negative impression of these places.

This episode of 'Today Tonight' was broadcast on 6 February 1985.
