Demonstration in Dublin against the apartheid regime in South Africa as the Springboks play Ireland.
The South African rugby team toured Ireland and Britain during 1969 and 1970. However, the all white team was not always welcomed with open arms. At the height of apartheid control in South Africa, the Springboks were viewed as a representation of the regime and the inequalities that existed in South Africa. The Irish Anti-Apartheid Movement organised demonstrations throughout the Springboks visit to voice their opposition to the apartheid regime.
On 10 January 1970, the Springboks played Ireland at Lansdowne Road in Dublin. Protesters were again out in force. Accompanied by a band anti-apartheid protesters march down O'Connell Street in Dublin holding placards with "No Racialism in Sport" and "Boks Go Home" written on them. There are scenes of unrest outside Lansdowne Road as the Springboks arrive by coach and protesters are confronted by police.
