There are 449 patients in emergency departments or on wards waiting for admission to a hospital bed, according to figures from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation.

Separately, Health Service Executive figures under its TrolleyGar system put the number of patients in emergency departments waiting for a bed at 330.

The HSE figures do not include patients waiting on wards for admission, which the INMO does count.

Both the INMO and HSE figures show an increase of over 20% waiting, compared with the same day last year.

According to the INMO, the hospital with the highest number of patients waiting is University Hospital Limerick with 46 patients, Cork University Hospital with 41 and the Midland Regional Hospital, Tullamore, with 39 patients waiting.

The next planned full meeting of the Emergency Department Task Force is on 27 September.
