A quantum computing focused project has won a Dublin student the SciFest 2018 title.
Adam Kelly, a fifth year pupil at Skerries Community College, scooped the top award for his source solution to simulating quantum computing.
He will now go on to represent Ireland at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Phoenix Arizona next year.
10,000 students took part in regional competitions of this year's SciFest, an all-island science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) initiative.
Adam Kelly was among 37 students selected to participate in the national final in Dublin today, having won the regional final at the Institute of Technology Blanchardstown.
Large scale quantum computers are not yet widely available and so this means their development requires fast, accurate simulations.
Adam developed an open source solution which was up to 15 times faster than conventional simulators.
Éabha Kenny, from Scoil Muire gan Smál, Convent of Mercy, in Roscommon won the new Broadcom Masters Award
It saw five junior cycle students compete for the opportunity to participate in the Broadcom MASTERS programme.
It includes attendance at ISEF next year along with 27 other delegates from 25 countries who are also part of the programme.
