More than 400 people waiting on trolleys for hospital beds

There are 409 patients on trolleys in emergency departments, or on wards today, waiting for admission to a hospital bed.

The hospital worst affected is Limerick University Hospital, which has 50 patients waiting.

The other hospitals badly affected are Galway University Hospital with 35 patients waiting and Waterford University Hospital with 30 patients waiting.

The daily average trolley count so far this month is 336 patients a day.

It compares with an average daily count of 299 patients for the same time this month last year.

The highest number recorded on a single day was 612 patients in January this year.
