A 22-year-old man who uploaded 30 profile images of teenage girls who were friends of his on Facebook to a pornographic website has been warned he faces a custodial sentence unless he receives the appropriate professional advice and intervention over the next three months.
Evan Meehan, of Dernish Lawn, Shannon, Co Clare, pleaded guilty to a number of criminal charges connected with uploading the images to a pornographic site on dates between October 2013 and June 2014.
The images were accompanied by captions of a sexually explicit nature which had caused great upset and distress to the 19 young women involved, some of whom went to the same secondary school as the defendant.
Gardaí began an investigation after the young women made a complaint to them when they discovered Meehan's actions.
Meehan, who was 19 at the time of the offences, was described as an introvert in his formative years.
His family, while supportive of him, have suffered in their community because of his behaviour, which was described by his solicitor as foolish and stupid.
After reading an extensive probation report, Judge Patrick Durcan adjourned the matter for three months, ordering Meehan to remain under the supervision of the probation services and to take the appropriate professional advice to deal with the issues in the case.
He heard Meehan had cooperated fully with gardaí, had taken down the offensive images and had no previous convictions.
Adjourning the matter until 3 May, he said he would have no hesitation in imposing a custodial sentence if the defendant did not comply fully with his order and seek the appropriate professional intervention.
