A 45-year-old garda has been before a special District Court sitting in Cork charged with more than 200 counts relating to alleged deception, theft and receiving corrupt payments.
John O'Halloran was arrested at his home on the South Douglas Road in Cork this morning.
He was charged at Togher Garda Station in Cork this afternoon by Inspector Fergal Foley.
Mr O'Halloran made no reply to the charges.
The amount of money referred to could total tens of thousands of euro, and the charges cover dates from 2009 to 2014.
The individual amounts referred to in the charges vary from €50 to €2,500.
Some of the charges relate to alleged offences at University College Cork.
Inspector Foley described the case as a very large and complex investigation.
In addition to charges of theft, there are charges under the Prevention of Corruption Act alleging that Mr O'Halloran corruptly accepted or obtained a payment or a gift as an inducement to provide his services as a member of An Garda Síochána.
Inspector John Deasy told the court that the Director of Public Prosecutions had directed trial on indictment.
Judge Olan Kelleher remanded Mr O'Halloran on bail until 16 February when a book of evidence will be served on him.
