A 57-year-old man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for attacking and raping a woman after luring her into a caravan in Dublin over five years ago.

Richard O'Brien, with an address in Arlington Lodge, Church Street, Tralee, Co Kerry, denied the charges but was convicted by a jury at the Central Criminal Court of rape, attempted rape, false imprisonment and assault causing harm to a woman in March of 2011.

He repeatedly interrupted the sentencing hearing last month, shouting abuse at his victim.

Judge Tony Hunt said O’Brien needs to be removed from society until it is safe for him to return.

O’Brien invited the woman, a grandmother, back to what he said was his sister’s birthday party.

When she became uneasy and wanted to go he lured her to a caravan at the back of the property by pretending to order a taxi.

There he punched her repeatedly and raped her.

The attack only ended after two men came in and stopped him.

Mr Justice Tony Hunt said O'Brien posed "a very serious threat indeed".

He said he had "identified someone who was vulnerable" and had "used deception" to attack her in an isolated caravan.

O'Brien was also convicted of rape and false imprisonment for a different attack last year and had also been extradited from the UK.

Mr Justice Hunt said he had been tempted to jail him for life but sentenced him to 15 years in prison, which he said was a large portion of his remaining life.
