The Children’s Hospital Group in Dublin is appealing to families to first attend their family doctor or out-of-hours GP service in a bid to limit attendances to Emergency Departments this weekend.

A statement issued by the group which comprises Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin; the Children’s University Hospital, Temple Street and the National Children’s Hospital in Tallaght said that the hospitals were currently experiencing "unprecedented demands for admissions to inpatient beds this week".

It said that all of the hospitals have seen an "increase in patients presenting with respiratory infections particularly in younger children and babies".

The statement said that the hospital group is working closely with the "Clinical Directors and hospital management in the three hospitals to ensure that every effort is made to manage this situation".
