A man in his 60s has died after being stabbed in his apartment off Cork Street in Dublin's south inner city.

The scene of the stabbing remained sealed off tonight as members of the garda technical bureau carried out a forensic examination.

The incident happened at Robinson’s Court - a small apartment complex off Cork Street in Dublin 8.

At around 2.30pm gardaí were called after the man received serious stab wounds.

He was taken to St James Hospital but was pronounced dead a short time later.

The dead man has been named locally as Tony Rogers.

It is believed he was a resident of the apartment complex and that the stabbing occurred inside his home.

A case conference was held in Kevin Street Garda Station and gardaí said they are following a line of inquiry.

Gardaí are appealing to witnesses who may have been in the Robinson's Court area this afternoon to contact them at Kevin Street Garda Station on 01 666 9400, the Garda Confidential Telephone Line on 1800 666 111 or any garda station.

This is the second time that a man has been stabbed to death at Robinson’s Court on Cork Street.

In August 2006, 80-year-old Vincent Plunkett died at the accommodation complex after sustaining stab wounds to the body and throat.
