The Department of Education has confirmed the site for a new second level school for Dublin city.

The new school, which will serve the Dublin 2, 4, 6, and 8 areas has been purchased at Sandymount in Dublin 4, will be located at a former Rehab group site on Beach Road, close to the coast.

The location of the school is at the outer limit of the large area the school is supposed to serve.

Strong demand has been identified for a multi-denominational and co-educational model of post primary schooling in the south Dublin city area, which is largely served by single-sex religious-run schools.

The new site will also be used to accommodate an existing multi-denominational primary school.

The post primary school is scheduled to open in 2018.

The development of the site will be subject to the granting of planning permission.

A process will also get under way to determine which patron body will run the school.
