Elective procedures postponed at University Waterford Hospital over water issue

University Hospital Waterford has cancelled elective procedures planned for Wednesday due to issues with its water supply.

Earlier, a spokesperson said that the current supply is not at the required quantity or quality.

Irish Water said that there will be some discolouration of the water supply to the hospital until this morning.

The company said this follows work done after a depletion of water supply levels over the weekend due to a technical fault following a lightening strike at pumps in a local reservoir.

"Arising from difficulties experienced in the public water supply from one of Waterford's reservoirs, University Hospital Waterford as a precautionary measure, is postponing elective procedures for a period of 24 hours," the hospital said in a statement.

"The situation will be monitored closely on an ongoing basis."

Vomiting bug restricts visits at Sligo University Hospital

An outbreak of the vomiting bug in a number of wards at Sligo University Hospital has led to the restriction of visiting at the hospital.

Hospital management is requesting that visitors do not come in order to prevent the spread of vomiting and diarrhoea.

People wishing to visit in exceptional circumstances must agree the visit with the specific ward manager in advance.

All elective inpatient activity has been postponed this week and day-case activity reduced, according to a statement from the hospital which said that patients are being contacted directly regarding the postponement of their pre-planned procedures.

An ante natal tour planned for yesterday evening was postponed.

The restrictions are expected to last throughout the week and the hospital is encouraging people to contact their GP or GP out-of-hours service in the first instance, and not to attend the Emergency Department unless absolutely necessary.

Patients with pre-planned hospital appointments such as outpatients who have not had any symptoms of vomiting or diarrhoea should attend their appointment as normal, unless otherwise advised by the hospital.
