A 41-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the discovery of a man's body in the Dublin mountains yesterday.

64-year-old Michael McCoy's body was discovered by mountain rescue services in a wooded area at Ballinascorney Hill in Brittas, Co Dublin on Friday morning.

Making an appeal for information, gardaí said Mr McCoy had sustained serious head injuries after being assaulted.

Mr McCoy, who was retired, was last seen when he left his home in the Ballinascorney area to walk his two dogs early on Thursday morning.

His family raised the alarm later that day after he failed to return home.

A search of the area around Ballinascorney Hill was carried out overnight and Mr McCoy's remains were discovered yesterday morning by members of the Dublin Wicklow mountain rescue service.

His remains were taken to Tallaght Hospital and a post-mortem examination was carried out by the State Pathologist Dr Linda Mulligan.

One of Mr McCoy's boxer dogs made its way back to the family home yesterday, but the second dog has not been found.

The arrested man is currently being detained at Tallaght Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

The scene has been preserved for a forensic examination and gardaí are appealing for anyone who was in the area between Thursday evening and the early hours of yesterday morning to contact them at Tallaght Garda Station on (01) 666 6000.
