Three local men in the Co Kilkenny village of Mullinavat are being credited with foiling an armed robbery this morning.

They tackled and stopped the suspect as he escaped along the main street after robbing the post office.

Gardaí say the local men captured the man, disarmed him and held him until officers arrived.

The incident started at around 12.30pm when a man entered the post office demanding cash.

No shots were fired but he escaped with a substantial amount of cash.

As he ran up the street, Father and son Billy and Liam Walsh and a third man, Fergal Tynan, ran after him, jumped on him and stopped him getting away.

Gardai were quickly on the scene, as were members of the Armed Response Unit from Waterford.

All the cash was recovered and a man in his 20s was arrested.

He is being questioned at Thomastown Garda Station.
