Man stands accused of 64 counts of rape and sexual assault

A 57-year-old man has gone on trial at the Central Criminal Court, sitting in Castlebar, charged with the rape and indecent assault of two females.

The offences are alleged to have taken place on dates between January 1976 and May 1986.

The man, who cannot be named, denies a total of 64 charges.

A jury of six woman and five men has been impaneled to hear the evidence, which will take a number of days to complete.

The man is charged with four counts of rape and 31 counts of indecent assault in respect of one of the victims. The abuse is alleged to have started when she was 10 and continued until she was 17.

Prosecuting Counsel Tara Burns told the jury this afternoon that they would hear evidence that the first rape took place in September 1979.

The man faces a further 29 charges of indecent assault in relation to the second complainant. The Court was told that the abuse began in 1976 and continued until 1983.

When the case began this afternoon, evidence was given in relation to the locations where the offences are alleged to have taken place.

Proceedings have adjourned for the day and will resume tomorrow morning. 

The trial, before Judge Tony Hunt, is expected to last for a week and a half.
