The jury in the trial of a 42-year-old man accused of assaulting, raping and threatening to kill and cause serious harm to his wife, has been sent home and will resume its deliberations in the morning.

The 11 men and one woman began their deliberations just after lunchtime and have spent almost two and a half hours deliberating.

The man pleaded not guilty to seven offences alleged to have occurred between May and August 2014.   

The jurors were directed to find him not guilty of one of the charges - an alleged threat to kill in June 2014.   

He has pleaded guilty to assaulting his wife with a hammer in August 2014.
