Psychiatric nurses will begin their industrial action with a work-to-rule on 29 June, in their dispute over staff shortages and resources in mental health services.

The board of the Psychiatric Nurses Association (PNA) made the decision at its meeting this morning.

87% voted to back the industrial action up to and including strike in a ballot result announced earlier this week.

The work to rule will begin with non co-operation with clerical duties and build from there.

The PNA represents around 5,000 psychiatric nurses and students around Ireland.

PNA General Secretary Designate Peter Hughes said the Health Service Executive now has an opportunity to facilitate engagement to resolve the serious issues concerning retention and recruitment of staff in the mental health services.

However, he warned the HSE that in the absence of concrete proposals to resolve the issues raised by PNA then nurses are determined to proceed with their action on 29 June.
