A 29-year-old man has appeared before Dublin District Court charged in connection with the investigation into the murder of Gareth Hutch.
Thomas Fox, of Rutland Court in Dublin, is charged with unlawful possession of a Makarov 9mm handgun.
The offence, under Section 27a of the Firearms Act, is alleged to have happened at Avondale House on 23 May, the day before Gareth Hutch was killed.
The 35-year-old father-of-one was shot dead as he was getting into his car outside Avondale House flats complex, where he lived on North Cumberland Street in the north inner-city, last Tuesday morning.
Detective Sgt Robert O'Reilly today gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution. He told the court Mr Fox was arrested yesterday at 7.17pm and had nothing to say in reply to the charge.
Gardaí asked that he be remanded in custody for a week. They are objecting to bail.
Chief Supt Pat Leahy told the court gardaí were objecting to bail due to the nature and seriousness of the charge.
He said the offence carries a potential sentence of up to 14 years in prison and he said a further more serious charge may be brought against Mr Fox.
Defence solicitor Yvonne Bambury told the judge that her client had presented himself voluntarily to gardaí, which was "highly unusual" in such circumstances.
She said he did not appear to be a man who did not intend to stand trial. He has no valid passport and would undertake not to apply for any travel documents. She said his partner was due a baby in six weeks' time.
Judge Anthony Halpin refused bail.
He said Mr Fox was charged with a most serious offence which was linked to the "abominable cold-blooded feud between two gangland families, the ferocity and viciousness of which had increased exponentially.
"You would have to be living on Mars to escape the daily reportage of the war waging between two families and the mounting victims as the product of their business," he said.
He said this was the context in which the nature and seriousness of the charge had to be viewed.
He said the charge before the court was a serious one in a society where the right to bear arms is highly regulated and policed.
He said the legislation allowed him to take into account the opinion of a chief superintendent when deciding on whether or not to grant bail.
He refused bail and remanded Mr Fox in custody until 8 June at Cloverhill Court.
Gareth Hutch is believed to be the seventh victim of a feud between two criminal gangs.
