Former Derry GAA player Johnny McGurk has admitted stealing over half a million pounds from one of Northern Ireland's best-known construction firms.

McGurk pleaded guilty at Antrim Crown Court to the theft of £572,206 from the quarry and tarmac road firm Patrick Bradley Ltd.

The 50-year-old company accountant also admitted 36 other charges involving fraud by abuse of his position of trust between 2006 and 2011.

A lawyer for McGurk said his client had a previous clear record but that his gambling addiction had led to his downfall.

McGurk played on the Derry senior team which won the All-Ireland football title in 1993, and also helped his club Lavey claim the 1991 All-Ireland club title.

He was remanded on continuing bail until his sentencing next month.
