Teen charged with murder of Mayo youth last year

A teenager has been charged with the murder of 17-year-old Dovydas Jenkus in Claremorris, Co Mayo, on 19 December last.

The 16-year-old youth, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared before a special sitting of Castlebar District Court this afternoon where Det Sgt James Carroll outlined that the accused was arrested at his home at 7.35am and taken to Claremorris Garda Station where he was charged.

In reply he said: "Nothing to say."

Inspector Tom Calvey said the DPP directions were that the accused was to be sent forward for trial to the Central Criminal Court.

Insp Calvey requested the accused be remanded to custody for the preparation of the book of evidence which will take five weeks.

Judge Mary Devins remanded the youth to Oberstown Boys Detention Centre to appear before Ballina District Court on Friday next, 8 April.

Dovydas Jenkus, who was originally from Lithuania, was fatally stabbed in an incident which occurred in the back garden of a house in the Claremount Manor estate in Claremorris in the early hours of 19 December. He died at the scene.
