A number of homes were evacuated in the Mayfield area of Cork city after a pipe bomb was thrown at a house in the early hours of this morning.

Around a dozen homes in the Shannon Lawn estate were evacuated while the viable device was being dealt with.

The device failed to explode and was later made safe by an Army bomb disposal team.

The alarm was raised at around 3.30am, and residents were allowed return to their homes just after 8am when the area was declared safe.

Gardaí at Mayfield are appealing to anyone with information to contact them.
