Searches are under way in Dublin's south inner city following a report that a gun was pointed at a uniformed garda in the city this afternoon.
A member of the Garda Traffic Corps stopped a van in the Francis Street area after the driver was seen not to be wearing a seatbelt.
When the garda went to take out his notebook, a handgun was allegedly pointed at him and the van drove off.
A man got out of the van for a short time in Thomas Street and was arrested when he returned to the vehicle.
A 49-year-old man, believed to be from Belfast, is being questioned at Pearse Street Garda Station.
