A man who was being questioned by gardaí in relation to the fatal stabbing of a 46-year-old man in Carlow town has been released without charge.

A file is being sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The man is aged in his 20s and knew the victim.

A post mortem examination is taking place on the victim, who has been named locally as Marcus 'Murt' Brennan.

It is understood the post-mortem will determine whether officers will upgrade the investigation to murder.

Toxicology tests will also form part of the investigation.
