Arrest after teenager's death in Co Mayo

A 16-year-old boy has been arrested following a fatal assault on a teenager in Co Mayo.

Emergency services were called to a house in the Claremount Estate in Claremorris shortly after 3am.

Neighbours said there was no indication of a major disturbance but when gardaí arrived at the scene they found a 17-year-old boy with stab wounds and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

He has been named locally as Dovydas Jenkas, a fifth-year student at a local secondary school.

It is understood he was originally from eastern Europe but had been living in Co Mayo for a number of years. 

Detectives have said the results from the post-mortem examination will determine the course of the investigation.

The teenager who was arrested is being held at Claremorris Garda Station.
