A 25-year-old student has been charged with the murder of his mother, Marian Horgan, at their family home in Cork.

Paul Horgan, with an address at Murmont Avenue, Montenotte, was brought before Cork District Court from Mayfield Garda Station where he had been held since his arrest on Monday.

The court was told that Mr Horgan made no reply when he was arrested, charged and cautioned. 

Judge Leo Malone granted an application for free legal aid after the court was told that Mr Horgan was a student.

Remanding Mr Horgan in custody to appear again before the court next Tuesday, Judge Malone also directed that he undergo psychiatric assessment while in custody.
