Irish soldiers who fought in World War I have been honoured at Glasnevin cemetery in Dublin during Armistice Day commemorations.

Wreaths were laid at the Cross of Sacrifice to remember those who died during the war following an ecumenical service.

After the service, a parade led by members of the Defence Forces walked to the Cross of Sacrifice, where wreaths were laid by dignitaries including Minister for Arts Heather Humphreys, Dublin Lord Mayor Críona Ní Dhálaigh and diplomats including British Ambassador Dominick Chilcott and US Ambassador Kevin O'Malley.

Plaques were also unveiled to Irish recipients of the Victoria Cross.

After the commemoration, Minister Humphreys opened a new exhibition at the cemetery museum, which focuses on unionist and nationalist soldiers from Northern Ireland who fought together in WWI.

Commemorations are also taking place around the world to mark the 97th anniversary of Armistice Day, which marked the end of the war.

In Britain, veterans and their families joined senior military figures at The Cenotaph in Whitehall to pay their respects to those killed in conflicts since the beginning of WWI.

More than 120,000 tributes were planted in Fields of Remembrance at Westminster Abbey and in Cardiff, Belfast, Gateshead, Edinburgh, Inverness and Lydiard Park near Royal Wootton Basset.

Chelsea Pensioners observed the two-minute silence at Lloyd's of London, where a remembrance ceremony was held on its trading floor.

In Woolwich, southeast London, the widow and young son of British soldier Lee Rigby laid wreaths at a service of remembrance at St George's Chapel where his name is engraved on a brass plague.

Fusiler Rigby was murdered in 2013 as he returned to Woolwich barracks from the Regimental Headquarters in the Tower of London.

Two British Muslims were later convicted of his murder.
