A former US attorney will be sentenced at Sligo Circuit Court on Thursday on charges of possessing child abuse material in Sligo town in 2009.

The court was told today that information from Interpol led gardaí to search an apartment being rented by Gerard Gilligan at Union Place in March of that year.

Gardaí seized 646 pages of graphic printed images involving children under the age of 12, including babies.

Detective Julie Coyne told the court it was the largest case of printed images she had ever come across.

Mr Gilligan, who is in his early 60s and has an address in New Jersey, had a number of previous convictions in the US including one for aggravated sexual assault and he was on the sex offenders register in Ireland.
