A woman who was arrested this morning as part of an investigation into allegations of abuse at a HSE-owned and operated residential centre in Co Longford has been released without charge.

The 35-year-old woman, who worked at a number of centres for people with intellectual disabilities in the midlands, had been detained at Longford Garda Station for questioning throughout the day

A file on the investigation will now be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Last August, gardaí began an investigation into allegations of abuse at a Health Service Executive-owned and operated residential centre for people with physical and intellectual disability.

Detectives interviewed staff and clients in the centre over several weeks and made an arrest early this morning.

The HSE has already said it notified the statutory authorities when the initial complaints were made and has been in contact with all the families.

In a statement it also said it is supporting the clients involved.

The HSE said it has "ensured that all protective measures to ensure the welfare of our clients and residents are in place".
