A reward fund set up to help find the killers of a pet dog in Cork has reached €5,200.

Marvin, a four-year-old Jack Russell who lived in Mayfield in the city, was found by his owners with his throat cut and a number of other wounds on Saturday afternoon.

Cork Lord Mayor Chris O'Leary started the fund, which is being organised by Cork's Red FM, by donating €200 yesterday.

The fund quickly grew and has now been capped at €5,200.

Anyone who can provide information that leads to the prosecution of those behind Marvin's death will be able to claim the money.

The dog's owners said he went missing on Saturday and was discovered by them around two hours later with a number of knife wounds all over his body.

There was also an attempt made to cut off one of his back paws.

Marvin was brought to a local vet but later had to be put down because of the extent of his injuries.

Cllr O'Leary described the attack as "barbaric", adding: "If someone would do that to a dog, you fear what they would do to a person."

Gardaí say are investigating the attack and are reported to be following a number of lines of inquiry.
