Gardaí are investigating an alleged assault on a baby in Galway city.

The infant, believed to be a few weeks old, was brought to University Hospital Galway with serious head injuries on 30 March from a suspected assault.

The baby was later transferred to Temple Street Children's Hospital in Dublin for further care.

A man in his 20s was arrested in connection with the incident but has since been released without charge.

A file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
