Escaped prisoner Derek Brockwell has been recaptured by police in Belfast this evening.

The 53-year-old convicted armed robber had been at large, following his escape from Tallaght Hospital, where he was brought for routine medical treatment.

Two prison officers who were attacked and stabbed remain in hospital.

Mr Brockwell, who was categorised as a dangerous inmate, was found sitting outside Wetherspoons Pub on Belfast's Dublin Road this evening.

It is understood that police spotted a man matching the description of Brockwell in the vicinity of the pub.

Police confronted him in an area outside the pub, sometimes used by smokers.

Brockwell was subdued with a Taser, then transferred to hospital in an ambulance.

It is understood that Brockwell has what appear to be serious stab injuries.

A small blue holdall, found at the scene where he was arrested, has been removed.

Brockwell has a record of violent crime and is known to have used guns and knives during a series of armed robberies and was locked up in a maximum security prison.

Prison authorities categorised him as a prisoner to be escorted by armed officers, but requests for an armed garda escort were refused a number of times.

His security status was downgraded in January of last year; therefore an armed escort was not requested for yesterday's hospital visit.

The Prison Service is carrying out an inquiry which the Director General says will include this issue.

More details have emerged about his escape from Tallaght Hospital.

He was escorted there by three prison officers for treatment for diabetes.

He was allowed to go to the toilet. One of the cubicles was occupied, and when he came out of the other, he was armed with a knife and two prison officers were attacked and stabbed.

Both officers underwent surgery in the intensive care unit last night.

Brockwell, who had been serving a seven-year sentence for robbery and possession of firearms, was driven away from the hospital on a motorcycle by an accomplice.

Earlier, Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald asked for a report into the circumstances surrounding the escape of Brockwell.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny expressed sympathy to the families of the prison officers who were injured saying they had showed great courage.

Mr Kenny also said the incident was not related to cutbacks.
