Gardaí in Cavan are searching for a prisoner who absconded from an open prison yesterday afternoon. 

John Paul Duncan, who is in his 30s and from Tallaght in Dublin, had been in custody since February 2010, after being caught in possession of €2.8m worth of drugs.

He was due for release in 2017 and had been serving his sentence in Castlerea Prison in Co Roscommon. 

Mr Duncan was transferred to Loughan House open prison in Cavan on Tuesday.

The Irish Prison Service says gardaí in Ballyconnell and Tallaght were informed immediately after the prisoner escaped.

The incident occurred at about 2.30pm yesterday afternoon.
