A woman was discharged from the jury and another sworn in for the trial of a man accused of murdering two women 18 years ago.

Mark Nash, 42, who had last addresses at Prussia Street and Clonliffe Road in Dublin has pleaded not guilty to the murder of Sylvia Shields, 59, and 61-year-old Mary Callanan between 6 and 7 March 1997.

The women lived in sheltered accommodation in a house attached to St Brendan's Psychiatric Hospital in Grangegorman.

The court heard that the juror would not be available for the last two weeks of the trial, which is expected to last six to eight weeks.

A woman juror was sworn in for the trial, which will begin tomorrow morning.

The jury members were told there would be evidence from gardaí attached to the Bridewell Station, Galway, Garda Headquarters, Mountjoy Prison and the forensic science laboratory.

Before the jury left for the day, Judge Carroll Moran told them they should not talk to anyone about the case, and only discuss it amongst themselves.
