A man in his late 50s has been arrested in connection with the stabbing of a woman at a house in Co Cavan this afternoon.
The woman in her late 40s suffered serious injuries when she was stabbed in the upper body at the house she shared with a man at Kilnaleck in Co Cavan.
She is being treated at Cavan General Hospital.
Her injuries are not thought to be life threatening.
The man is well known in Republican circles.
He served a sentence in the 1990s after being convicted of a serious crime.
He is being held at Cavan Garda Station.
The scene at Kilnaleck is preserved pending a full garda technical examination.
